2023 Tatomer Grüner Veltliner, Meeresboden, Santa Barbara County

$25.00

In 2003, Graham Tatomer packed his bags and moved to Austria to try to get a better grip on the growing and making of Riesling.  He was able to find work with Weingut Knoll who, and more importantly, became a second family. They also turned me on to the Grüner Veltliner grape.  What initially was planned to be a ten-week trip; turned into a year and two additional harvests. Tatomer left with much more knowledge and experience regarding this important Austrian grape.

Meeresboden is German for “Ocean Soil”. This wine is a blend of two vineyards Tatomer has in Santa Barbara County, both grown on sand dunes, hence the name. The two vineyards are John Sebastiano, located in the northeast corner of the Sta. Rita Hills, and Kick-on Ranch, located west of Los Alamos. 2023, was a cool weather harvest. The resulted in wines fully flavored, bright acidity, and enhanced texture. It certainly will be a vintage for the ages.

The wine has some of the classic Grüner Veltliner notes such as grapefruit, nectarine, melon, and thyme. Meeresboden is balanced with stone fruit, and yellow citrus flavors, as well as a salty, kelp-like minerality.  Young, this wine is bright and racy; with age it will become silky and more honeyed.
